Do you allow informal chatting in your class? Regarding the ground rules and grading rubrics, and applying that to our classes, do we need to set some rules to our students' chatting during class hours?
Some teachers would correct their informal vocabulary and won't accept informal conversations in class, not me. If they are not following a formal activity, and they are really chatting to each other, I would allow them to use the vocabulary they want.
In other words, when they are assigned a classwork using the required terms, I won't allow informal chatting. However, if they are finished or discussing to get an activity done, I will allow them to use everyday chatting.
Of course, there are some limits, I won't allow them to use bad words.
As teachers, there is a point when you need to think what is the limit, and find a balance. Not too strict, but not too permissive. It is hard to find that. Have you?
Hello Marga,
ReplyDeleteI usually provide examples of correct and colloquial expressions stressing what they are allowed to use while talking at school and what they may use while talking to each other or other peers.
When a student says an expression that he/she has heard or read and it is not grammatically correct, I just point it out. Then when teaching grammar, I often ask students how they would say a particular structure in English and we discuss all possibilities they have come across hightlighting those they are expected to use in tests.
Learning the language is not only about learning the proper grammar but also about being aware of being appropriate in any environment and to be able to distinguish the environment they are into.
In my opinion, what you do makes sense and you should encourage your students to use the language.

Hello Marga,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on creating your blog and adding the URL to the Blog Roll.
Do you have any thoughts to share about what you've done and accomplished during Week 1 of our course?
Donna
I've really enjoyed creating a blog and sharing ideas with my colleagues from different parts of the world. Actually, I am learning a lot more than I expected.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty impressed.
And I created a blog, uh? how about that!!
Thank you
Marga
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI've learned a lot again during this third week. I've found some webpages I've never seen before. However, that's not what I like the most about this week.
I couple of days ago, I was about to send an email to Donna asking if once the course finishes, we are going to be able to log in and have access to all the pages we've visited. The answer would have been "it's not necessary Marga", because there is a tool called delicious, where you can save all your favorite pages.
Amazing!! I don't know if it's just me, but I didn't know you can do all this.
Once again, this is a lot more than I expected.
Marga
Hello Marga,
ReplyDeleteI think that you are not "creating a new post" each week for your blog. I think you are replying to your own Week 1 post. Is this correct?
Can you please try creating a new post each week?
Thanks.
Donna
Hello Donna,
ReplyDeleteYou are right! Now I've tried to create a new blog, but I can't add to this one. How is it?
I wrote the same URL, but it is not accepted.
Help!!
My new blog is on Week 4!
Marga
It's done!! I have to click on "new post."
